Navy Seals M4a1 - After photos of Virginia SEALs training went viral, people wanted to know about the standard rifles they were carrying. Here's what we found.
Yesterday we posted some amazing photos of Navy SEALs and SWCCs working with the Navy's Night Stalkers off the coast of Dam Neck, Virginia. You can see those pictures here. Our inbox soon filled with questions about how the SEALs, from SEAL Team Six, a unit with a unique arsenal of weapons, were carrying out their training mission on the modified MH very much. -6 Little Birds and MH-60 Black Hawk. So we did some research, and here's what we found: They are truly unique, at least as far as US weapons and AR-15 / M4 / M16 model rifles are concerned.
Navy Seals M4a1
From what we can tell through photos captured by aviation photographer Raven Harris, the rifle's uppers are from the famous Noveske AR-15 manufacturer based in Grants Pass, Oregon. Noveske has a reputation that transcends the legendary in the firearms community and it's no surprise that SEAL Team Six's famous gunsmiths turn to them for some of the team's needs. Between 2007 and 2020, the US Army awarded multiple Noveske contracts worth a total of nearly $4.9 billion, according to records available through the Federal Procurement Database System. These agreements came through various offices within the service, including the Crane Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indiana, which has developed specialized small arms for the Naval Special Warfare Command for years.

Upper rifle assembly appears to be complete, including barrel, gas block and barrel, handguard/rail system, upper receiver, charging mechanism, forward assist, dust cover and bolt carrier group , as a group of 10.5″ Gen III Noveske, almost identical. Shorty Upper, which The specifications are top notch and include a billet machined upper receiver and one of Noveske's most premium stainless steel barrels, which have a reputation for extreme accuracy.

A 10.5" barrel length is common for SEALs, and especially SEAL Team Six, who work in a counter-terrorism role with missions over urban areas, ships, and even underground structures. Mk 18, to also known as the Close Quarters Battle Receiver (CQBR), with its 10.3" barrel. Other US special operations forces units, as well as other elements of the Navy and Coast Guard, also adopted these pistols.
The HK 416s used by SEAL Team Six in the Bin Laden raid, which made the guns famous, used 10.4″ barrels. Unlike these weapons, which use a piston arrangement to cycle the action, the Noveske arrangement is a direct impact (DI) system, originally designed by Eugene Stoner, and later as the M16, CAR-15, and M4. You can read more about the debate on pistons and DI for AR-15 style rifles here.

Where things get a little off is the lower receiver. These guns appear to lack the Noveske billet design, but instead have a more traditional receiver. They could still be Noveske, but they don't make up the high end common receiver sets we see on the commercial market. In any case, there is no reason to combine a billet top and a forged base. SEAL gunners will likely attach the Noveske upper to their custom, fully assembled lower, which would include a standard trigger and fire control assembly.
Regardless, the lower receivers appear to be configured with ambidextrous bolt supports/releases and flared/enhanced triggers. The latter is a common feature that makes it easier for users who wear gloves. The lower end is finished with lightweight Magpul SL-K Carbine Stock and Lancer Systems 30-round magazines, some of which are blue Train Safety types designed for Simulations and similar non-lethal simulation training weapons, loaded into the wells mag.
At the end of the Noveske stainless steel barrel is a Sandman with a Dead Air Silencer. The top hand-held rail laser pointer/illuminator system is the L3Harris AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target Pointer Illuminator (ATPIAL). Above the flattop receiver is an Aimpoint Micro T2 red dot optic mounted on a Scalarworks Leap mount. Other operators can be seen with EOTech XPS holographic sights. Beyond that, there are minor differences between the rifle groups, with straight front grips and INFORCE WML weapon lights attached to some SEAL weapons. One also has a different stock, some don't have the improved bolt support/release, the main grips seem to vary, including overmolded HK416 and Hogue styles. These variations appear to be due to personal operator preference, but in general the primary weapons of the operators are fairly uniform across the SEAL teams shown in the photos.
So what does one of these SEAL-approved rifles do? Well, if you collected one at list prices it would cost around $5,500.
How And Why The Special Forces Set Up Their M4s The Way They Do.
It's not cheap, but for those who use these things in the most threatening environments and worst situations imaginable, it's a bargain. The primary weapon used by SEAL operators is the M4A1 carbine. A shorter and more compact version of the M16A2 rifle, it was designed specifically for US Special Operations Forces. In 1994, the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Army Special Operations Command (SOPMOD) developed the M4A1 Accessory Kit to make this weapon unique in versatility, lethality and effectiveness. The M4A1 is a high-tech, multi-purpose assault rifle that the operator can configure with a variety of advanced optics, lasers, and lighting systems for fast and accurate target engagement day and night. It fires in semi-automatic and automatic mode, and is effective for close-range duties and long-range targets. The M4A1 excels in close combat and counter-insurgency operations. It fires a high velocity 5.56mm round, which is essential when engaging terrorists with body armor or bulletproof vests. This rifle can be quickly and easily converted to a grenade launcher or a shotgun.
2005-2010 Integrated Carbine - The SOPMOD Block 3 update will include a simpler version of the M4A1 Carbine, designated the Integrated Carbine. It includes all the improvements on the M4A1 carbine by moving the optics and lasers out of the weapon and into the weapon itself, and it provides a thermal sight device. Mode switches and buttons are integrated into the vertical handle to activate lasers, thermals and other sights and visible light. Thermal observation components may have the ability to link to the Joint Surveillance and Targeting Radar System (JSTARS).
This unique modification and accessory kit allows the operator to tailor their weapon to a specific operation or mission requirement. It includes optical sights, night vision devices, laser devices and/or lights that can be mounted on the roof or side rails of the weapon. This kit also includes barrel assemblies to convert the weapon into a grenade launcher or shotgun.
