Only two prototypes were completed and only one was equipped with an actual turret and the other only a mock-up. The project was canceled in August 1944 before any production examples were completed. Two prototypes continued testing until they were deliberately destroyed in the face of advancing Allied forces. Nevertheless, enough material remained to allow the Red Army to assemble a complete example and bring it back to Kubinka for testing. Saved for later, it combines the hull of the first prototype "V1" with the turret of the second prototype "V2". It is known as Hall 5 of the Kubinka Tank Museum, although it is now on display in Pavilion 5 of Zone 2 of the Patriot Park Museum. Kubinka, Moscow region, Russia.

The Panzer line went through several upgrades until finally reaching the VIII version. The line was developed by Porsche, which at the time was best known for the Volkswagen Bug. On the eve of World War II, the early models of the Panzer were somewhat late and met the Soviet T-34 tank.
In January 1943, Hitler intervened in the project and demanded that the tank be equipped with a 128-mm main gun, a 75-mm gun and a machine gun for anti-aircraft targets. But the original designs could not support such a platform, so a new design was needed.
