Over the past 2 years I have fired over 70,000 rounds with my Glock pistol in training and competition. I mention this fact because although I maintain my Glocks carefully, those 70,000 shots (55,000 of them in a G19) have revealed interesting and instructive maintenance issues.
With this experience in mind, I will share here some recommendations for maintaining a Glock pistol for a long life and a high level of reliability. Of course, nothing is guaranteed with mechanical devices, but these steps that I will share here will allow you to fulfill your responsibilities and do your part to reduce the risk of damage or loss of life. The really dirty components that need special attention are the extractor (especially the blade edge/groove), the firing pin safety piston and the business end of the firing pin. I use rem oil wipes or rem oil soaked patches to completely remove gunpowder residue.

Most small Glock parts are fairly inexpensive and I recommend keeping a few for each Glock you have at all times This way, when you fail—and if you train a lot, you will fail—you can just leave without ordering a new replacement and wait for it to arrive.
There are a handful of Glock pistol components that wear out more quickly than others and require regular replacement. These include the recoil spring assembly, trigger spring, slide lock spring, and magazine lock spring.
The recoil spring is the backbone of your gun There are many ideas and preferences as to when to replace the return spring, a) avoid cycling problems and b) prevent breaking the lock block pin. I would suggest that you replace the recoil spring (total overcharge) every 3000-5000 rounds in the .40 cal and .357 sig. For the .380, 9mm, .45 and 10mm I recommend changing every 5,000 to 10,000 rounds each.
Glock factory returns springs I tried a few others and didn't have a Glock-OEM spring back for more than 1,000 turns before breaking or starting cycling problems. Many other non-OEM parts can work just fine on a Glock, but I find that if you're at all interested in reliability there's no substitute for a Glock spring.
