Fort Hood Visitors Center - Welcome to Fort Hood in the heart of Texas! Moving to a new installation can be both exciting and stressful. Fortunately, you are PCSing to a post nicknamed "The Great Place" because of the quality of life the post provides Soldiers and their families. You will soon find out how true the nickname is.
As they say, everything is bigger in Texas, and so is Fort Hood. Spread over nearly 215,000 acres in central Texas, Fort Hood is one of the largest military posts in the world by area and is the largest armed post of the United States Armed Forces. Fort Hood is the US Army's premier heavy military training and deployment site.

About 45,000 enlisted men and women work at Fort Hood. About 10,000 civilians, NAF or other personnel are at the post. About 19,000 family members reside at Fort Hood and about 90,000 family members live outside the post route.

With several major highways right next to the post, it's easy to get to and from Fort Hood. So whether you're here to stay or train, you shouldn't have any problems getting around.
The closest Amtrak stop to Fort Hood is the bus stop outside the Copeland Soldier Service Center. This bus connects travelers to the Amtrak station in Temple, Texas. Alternatively, you can take a Greyhound bus from Killeen to Dallas, San Antonio and other parts of Texas.

There are several small and regional airports near Fort Hood. Traffic is definitely a factor in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, so plan ahead if you're short on time.
When it's time to PCS, it's time to call the Fort Hood installation transportation office. They will help you organize your move to get your things to wherever your new home is.

Upon arrival at Fort Hood, all new recruits or enlisted personnel under PCS orders are assigned to Battalion Avenue and T.J. should report to the Copeland Soldier Service Center (building 18010) at the corner. Mills Blvd. If you report to work between 06:00 and 17:00 Monday to Wednesday or Friday, you must be in uniform.

All visitors and non-DOD card holders must go through one of two visitor centers to enter Fort Hood. The Marvin Leath Visitor Center processes visitor tickets for non-DOD ID card holders, AIE Registration Services, and Fort Hood Firearms Registration Services. Those not pre-sponsored must expect long delays or meet their sponsor at the gate. The Visitor Center is open 24/7, including weekends, and T.J. Near Main Gate, Building 69012 Mills Blvd. For more information, call 1 (254) 287-9909. The North Fort Hood Visitor Center is located on US Highway 36, through the North Fort Hood Gate at Building 56342, just outside the city limits of Gatesville, TX. The North Fort Hood Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday from 0800 to 1400, except for federal and school holidays. Soldiers assigned to Fort Hood in need of DEERS assistance should go directly to the Copeland Soldier Services Center at Building 18010, corner of T.J. Mills Road and Fleet Avenue. Copeland is open 24/7. It's no problem to get a new CAC, Dependent ID, or make any changes to your official administrative file at the Fort Hood DEERS office. You can make an appointment online and skip the waiting room.

Fort Hood is located between Killeen and Coopers Cove in the beautiful mountain and lake country of Central Texas, 60 miles north of Austin, 200 miles northwest of Houston, 50 miles south of Waco, and 150 miles south of Dallas. Fort Hood is fortunate to have Killeen, Gatesville, Harker Heights, Temple and Copperas Cove as neighbors. These cities include new and affordable housing, shopping centers, many entertainment options and a variety of good restaurants.

Killeen fell into decline after World War II ended when Camp Hood (now Fort Hood) was abandoned. The city flourished when it was established as a permanent military post. By 1955, Killeen had approximately 21,076 residents and 224 businesses. The 2019 US Census put the city's population at nearly 152,000, making it one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Homes in the area are plentiful and affordable, with a variety of historic and new homes for sale. The average rent is less than $1,000 a month, and the average mortgage costs about $200. The commute time for most residents is about 22 minutes.
The city is located between Waco and Austin and is located on the east side of the Leon River, part of the Brazos River watershed. Gatesville is famous for one of 17 remaining movie theaters in Texas and the world's largest collection of spurs housed at the Coryell Museum and Historical Center. Gatesville is located on the northern edge of Fort Hood, and much of its economy depends on the military (in addition to Fort Hood, there is a large military vehicle repair plant on the east side of town). 12,400 people live in this residential community. Housing in Gatesville is very affordable, with median rents of $725 and mortgages over $1,000.
Harker Heights is located 10 miles southeast of Fort Hood. The city provides an excellent quality of life to its approximately 33,000 residents. Harker Heights was established in 1960 due to the need for new residential areas to accommodate the influx of Fort Hood military families. The town is home to parks and Stillhouse Hollow Lake, which offers fishing, hiking, camping and swimming opportunities. Annual events include Paws in the Park in April, featuring pet competitions, a speed course and pet adoptions; Food, Wine and Beer Festival in September; and the Frost Festival in December. Residents enjoy affordable housing, with rents starting around $900 and mortgages around $1,700 a month.
Founded as a small rural farming and ranching community in the 1870s, Copper's Cove has grown to become the largest city in Coryell County with a population of over 33,000. The city is just east of Fort Hood and is a great place to start a new business or relocate an existing one. Pleasant neighborhoods are located throughout the city, with many prime locations for buyers, such as those with mountain views or golf course views. Homes are affordable, with an average rent or mortgage ranging from $900 to $1,200. Copperas Cove has a lot of entertainment and is available in town.
