Keltec P17: Value Priced Rimfire Blaster
Like many other gun enthusiasts, I was extremely disappointed with the .22 release of Glock. As a result, I've been on the lookout for something to fill the void. The Kel-Tec P17 popped up on my radar as more positive reviews started pouring in. I probably had to choose one and see for myself.
This gun is incredibly cheap. It costs less than $200, which is a drop in the bucket if you like guns. It doesn't even mention the value you get out of it. It may look ugly and cheap (and it is), but it sure feels good to shoot.
I was able to play in magazines, a lot. There were a few hiccups here and there, but nothing major. This was my biggest concern after seeing the price and the disastrous Glock 44, but I'm happy to report it's not an issue with the P17.
Now I have to mention that I don't like the look of the P17 at all. The seams where the polymer has been joined are obvious and a bit sore. It just looks cheap. The good news is that her appearance is the biggest negative, everything else is up.

I find the size to be quite good for a taller guy like me. The gun is not difficult to handle due to its small size. It's easier to have consistent shots and not be miserable when shooting a small pistol. It should be a cinch to shoot for hands of all sizes.
It is also light, comes only one point. The P17 is low profile, with an overall length of less than 7 inches, making it a solid choice for concealed carry if you insist on carrying a .22. Personally, I had no desire to carry such a small caliber.
To me, the P17 is just a great gun to pull out of the safe and use with agility. The trigger seems usable. No grit or stickiness here. Reloading is pretty much the same as you're used to. The magazine size lives up to its name with a 16+1 capacity.
I got exactly what I wanted from the Kel-Tec P17. It's a fun little .22 that covers all the bases for a fun chain toy. It's super affordable, works like a charm, and feels pretty good in the hands. It's a good size for concealing if you like that, but really shines when you're not on the blinking string. The visuals leave a lot to be desired, but the look pales in comparison when looking at the bigger picture. Definitely worth buying if you have even a passing interest in a 22 handgun. After the futuristic, high-capacity CP33, the more conventional P17 was, well, pedestrian. It seems the gun was meant to be an affordable gun that anyone could enjoy.
Watch: Kel Tec P17 .22 Lr
At $200 MSRP (and less than that at retail), Kel-Tec succeeds with the first lens. The second objective - high performance to compete with higher priced competitors - was achieved just as well.
The muzzle is factory threaded and the barrel nut can be replaced with the included 1/2 x 28 threaded extended adapter. A wrench to swap these parts is included with the gun. Three (!) 16-round no-drop magazines are included with the gun.
No magazine magazine is included, but it turns out that none are necessary: Kel-Tech engineers have managed to achieve reliable feeding with all types of .22 LR - subsonic to hyper-velocity - without going through extra-urban resorts.
The barrel, trunnion and steel bolt are machined steel. The thin frame is stamped and bent. The unusually shaped slide is a steel stamping - it only includes the top and front action, the sides being contained by the grip frame halves.

The grip frame is a clamshell (typical for Kel-Tec), though some design elements look atypical. For example, the ambidextrous magazine release is paddle-style. The single-stage curved trigger breaks into three even points.
Dual main springs provide symmetrical pressure on the hammer, reducing friction in the firing mechanism. A red cocked hammer indicator is visible on the rear of the frame when the gun is ready to fire. The P17 is hammered with an anti-fall safety.
I celebrate the lack of a magazine disconnect, as the "functionality" imposed on some pistols actually decreases safety by complicating the release process. All controls are properly protected against accidental activation.
The gun feels short due to the full size grip, but the barrel is 3.8 inches long. It balances easily in the hand for a deliberately aimed shot.
Kel Tec P17: Super Affordable And Works Like A Charm
The proof of the value is still in the live-fire performance, however. Kel-Tec put an extra year of development into the P17 to ensure it worked reliably with all types of ammunition. It is also quite accurate with a wide variety of loads.
The clear sights and smooth trigger help a lot with accuracy. At 50 yards, the 8-inch Steel was an easy target for the P17, and the IDPA Cardboard was just as easy at 100 yards. Operation was flawless.
The P17 is often seen as a direct competitor to the Taurus TX 22. It is a third lighter, around 40% cheaper and comes with an additional magazine.
The TX22 samples I've seen are equally accurate and reliable, but all have the rear sights maxed out for vintage and still pull slightly or significantly (with the suppressor installed) to the right.

One area where TX22 wins is in suppressing shots with high velocity ammo. The short breech block of the P17 is open on both sides, so that the strong thumb of the hand can warm up close to the breech face.
The same feature gives P17 the advantage of a much higher and more stable hold with the support thumb even with the drill line, impossible with
